about st. andrew's HENDERSON
Presbyterians have worshipped in Henderson since the early part of last century. The church was opened in 1911 in Station Road (now Railside Avenue). It was originally under Home Mission charge. The Church Hall was moved to our present location in 1964 and renovated as a Church with a hall built onto the building in an “L” shaped complex. The kitchen and meeting room (lounge) was added onto the Church in the 1980’s.
The parish has a committed membership and is experiencing a steady growth across the full age range from children and young families to older people. Members of all ages and cultural backgrounds mix well. There is a positive, friendly and welcoming atmosphere within the Church family. “Family” is the operative word. Post–service morning tea is a drawn-out chatty occasion when we catch up with others’ highs and lows with genuine care, enjoyment and concern. Worship is Minister-led with Parishioners leading bible readings and intercessory prayers.
MUSIC @ ST. ANDREW'S
At St Andrews hymns are accompanied by the organ and/or the piano. There are three organists who share the task of playing for services each Sunday.
The hymns we use in our services are a mix of traditional and contemporary. They are drawn from hymn books such as With One Voice, Mission Praise and Voices United. We also like to include New Zealand hymns and songs of praise, using Alleluia Aotearoa, Faith Forever Singing , NZ Praise and other NZ Hymnbook Trust publications. We include songs from the Mainly Music programme in our services, acknowledging and celebrating the very strong Mainly Music group held at the church every Wednesday. Samoan hymns are included in each service recognising the increasing number of Samoan families in our congregation.
Our Youth Group has recently formed a music group which provides music for youth centred services when they are held. Each year we have one or two singing based services when we introduce and learn new hymns, and practise ones learned on previous occasions. We also encourage members of the congregation to suggest new hymns, or ask for their favourites to be included in services.
Some of our members sing in the Many Choirs Festival which is held annually in July / August. Choristers from churches all over Auckland join together for a choral service which is held on two consecutive Sunday evenings.
